Someone's Dead Cell PhoneImage by Arthaey via Flickr
Cell phones are such a part of daily life that we consider them a necessity. Apart from 'old people' it's rare to find a person without one. Inexpensive products like Tracfone, a prepaid cell phone, make phones accessible to all. Minorities, students and those with limited income don't want to be in a contract for 2 years. The service is too costly for purchasing a phone and you usually have to pay more for the cool phones anyway. You can get a good basic phone for $15 and buy the time. Airtime cards are more per minute but easily managed when reserved for emergencies or limited use. Parents give this to their kids for emergencies and general updates to their whereabouts. Immigrants may lack credit scores or other information required to get a cell phone with other providers. They use calling cards to communicate with loved ones outside the country. Free of traditional service requirements, the phones are in major retail stores, to buy 'over-the-counter'. Essentially, your local grocery store is now a cell phone shop. You can easily locate the display where ever you go.
Wal-mart could easily be considered the largest cell phone shop around. They started with in-store service provider booths, like a kiosk in a mall. A trained sales person handled contracts separate from Wal-mart. Recently, they expanded exclusivity with Straight Talk. A product made by Tracfone, which offers services comparable to the carrier, Cricket. The biggest market is low income consumers and immigrants. Prepaid calling cards have been the best option for minorities and are found in places they frequent-including gas stations. There are no obligations to give a name, address or social security for the retention of anonymity.
These Tracfones will continue to show up in various grocery stores/super centers and may be well on its way to the corner gas station near you! The selection of phone brands and prices vary between locations. Basic models of LG, Samsung, Motorola, and Kyocera range from $14.99-$49.99. Options like Bluetooth capabilities and cameras make them competitive with other providers. You can see all the models options online are may get a better deal at Tracfone.com. Some models come with double minutes for the lifetime of the phone. Both this website and Walmart.com have frequent online promotions for airtime cards and other accessories or just pick one up when you get gas.

The cell phone marketing era has finally arrived! Now you can market through cell phone networks, like Google but on your cell phone. Since this is so new most people have no idea what they are doing, which in so many words means this area is almost completely untapped. Another unbelievable reality is that there are more cell phone owners than computer owners which implants a powerful statistical image of this new marketing avenue.
Listed below is a check list of 7 key steps for running a successful mobile phone marketing campaign:
1.) Identify what it is people are looking for on their cell phones. People do much more on cell phones than you think, especially iPhones where they might download music, videos, podcasts or software.
2.) Make a list of what you would look for while on your cell phone.
3.) Create a list of ads that grab your attention. Collect them from keyword searches in Google.
4.) Make sure the website (or landing page) you use has no Flash content or videos because the cell networks do not handle this technology well.
5.) Create an offer in the form of an audio, video or short message with a link or website.
6.) Launch campaign on at least one mobile marketing source like Admob.com.
7.) Monitor what is working and make necessary adjustments.
The beauty of the this new marketing world is that it is so fresh, the perfect time to jump and explore this virgin territory. Personally, I am every day souring for new techniques and technologies that have anything to do with communication and the whole cell wave came in fast, though most marketers are still missing the boat on this one.
Besides my avid pursuit in the realm of communications another one is automation. I dream, as I think most of us do, of discovering as many seamless shortcuts to life and business as possible so we can focus on the things we care about. This new frontier is another bridge in the quest for automation, what we have been reading in SiFi and adventure books since we were kids... what the world would be like one day.

Most people do not realize how fast mobile cell phone technology is moving today, it seems to be exponentially increasing. As we study all the new applications and features along with all the new devices, we see that there is no stopping these advances. The question is; are you in or out? Will you embrace these new technologies and applications or fear them. Are you sure you trust these innovations? What about privacy, hacking, what about the future?
To quickly illustrate just how fast things are moving in the smart phone space, let me give you a few examples. These are up to date, as in this week; personal tech articles in the smart cell phone industry. The first article I found in Boston.com, an article titled: "Check this out: Deposit money by taking a photo," By Andrew Vanacore - AP Business Writer / February 23, 2010. In the article the writer states:
"In the near future, you might not even have to visit a bank or an ATM to deposit a check. You'll simply snap a couple of photos of it with your cell phone. Applications to do just that are already available for Apple's iPhone and other gadgets from USAA, a company that provides insurance and banking mainly for military veterans."
He goes onto explain in this personal mobile smart cell phone tech piece that banks such as Chase, B of A, and Citibank appear to be all in with this technology suggest the article's author, and they will introduce this technology in 2010. The concept is called "remote depositing capturing," and where as this seems to be great technology and a user friendly concept, we must also recall the target that mobile users have become from hackers, especially as we learn of the release of secret codes used to encrypt such devices.
Scary stuff, for those using such applications, but indeed, it would sure make electronic wired deposits easy wouldn't it? Of course, if cell phone banking bothers you, perhaps we should suggest window shopping in real time via your cell phone? No sense in shopping tell you drop anymore, just walk by the window, even if the store is closed and press buy, and it's yours, and will be sent to your home. Online shopping while window shopping.
A recent article in the New York Times explains it all. The title of the article; "Cellphones Let Shoppers Point, Click and Purchase" By Stephanie Rosenbloom - Published: February 26, 2010. The author explains how shoppers can use their cell phone to order from the window of a retail store, and buy online simply by pointing at the item in the window; wow, now that's cool.
Wow, what a concept, all this via your smart phone technology. And this is something that will definitely be a hit with shoppers and cell phone users. Okay, so what about Skype smart phone calls? Yes, that too is available now; In TopNews online of India and article titled; "Samsung embeds Skype" which was submitted by Jimmy Peterson on Sat, 02/27/2010 - 12:25 explains it all. The article researched the impressive growth of Skype usage features in various smart phone devices, as if it could become the international standard for all cellphones in the future. Panasonic and LG are already offering this, and it is a big hit in the EU and Asia markets.
As fast as one company introduces a new feature, all the others seem to follow. Just because Apple or Google has a new application, does not mean the industry will not make that a standard feature on all smart phones, just like digital camera, video clips, etc. Sure the technologies or applications might work slightly differently due to patents, software, device hardware, but essentially all companies will offer all applications eventually.
The competitive nature of the industry is heating up as 100s of millions of Chinese, Indians, South East Asians, Africans, and South Americans are getting their first mobile devices, face it, it's a mobile wired world. In fact, in a recent article in MB Manila Publishing Company's online version; "Report: Global phone sales grow 8% in Q4," By Melvin G. Calimag on February 27, 2010, 2:19pm explained how smart phone sales are hitting record numbers in 2009 up nearly 25% and could double in 2010.
Indeed, I'd say this is an exciting time in the mobile smart personal tech sector, perhaps, you'd like to upgrade, and get on board and enjoy some of the incredible applications which are being announced monthly, even weekly in some cases. Why not consider upgrading your cell smart phone device and signing up for a new cell calling plan? Please consider all this, because our Online Think Tank is.
